Organization of Public Health Student Association
The PHSA functional organization is based on the PHSA Constitution (available for Free Download as a Word document.)
There are four components that serve the PHSA mission and all the SPH students:
- The Executive Board's Officers and Leaders
- The Departmental Representatives
- The PHSA Council
- The Committees' Work
School of Public Health Committees
The UCLA School of Public Health has various standing committees to aid in its administration and academic affairs functions. While not part of the PHSA, several committees have a designated "Student Representative."
The SPH Committee Appointments for 2008-2009 were released on October 18, 2008. Several vacancies exist for Student Representatives. Please contact the PHSA at phsa@ph.ucla.edu for more information.

EXECUTIVE BOARD AND ITS OFFICERS
The Executive Board (also referred to as "the e-Board," or the Executive Council) has five officers who are elected annually (as provided in the PHSA Constitution, Article VI, pages 10 - 11):
The PHSA Executive Board each officer position individually have specific duties (described in the PHSA Constitution, Article II, "Executive Board," pages 2 - 5).
PHSA COUNCIL / DEPARTMENT REPRESENTATIVES
PHSA accepted applications for 21 open 1st year, 2nd year and doctoral student representative positions, to serve on the PHSA Council and who were elected in Fall 2008 (as provided in the PHSA Constitution, Article VI, pages 10 - 11).
Applications and Deadline
The deadline for application was contained on the application.
Applications were due October 17, 2008, and students could apply using an online application: Download here for information purposes only. The deadline has passed.
PHSA Representatives to the PHSA Council may be first year, second year or doctoral students. They serve on behalf of each of the five academic departments within the School of Public Health and have specific duties (listed below, and as established under the PHSA Constitution, Article II, page 6):
- Biostatistics
- Community Health Sciences
- Environmental Health Sciences
- Epidemiology
- Health Services
The available positions included:
- FIRST YEAR REPS -- Ten (10) positions:
- Up to two (2) 1st year Reps. for each of CHS, EHS, HS, Epi, and Biostats
- SECOND YEAR REPS -- Six (6) positions:
- One (1) 2nd year Rep. for each of CHS and Epi and two (2) 2nd year Reps. for HS and EHS
- DOCTORAL REPS -- Five (5) positions:
- One (1) doctoral student Rep. for each of CHS, EHS, HS, Epi, and Biostats.

As of October 31, 2008, we just finished our Fall election process and would like to officially introduce the Public Health Student Association's (PHSA) 2008-2009 officers:

We are extremely excited for this academic year as we have lots of great ideas and want to make this year the best! We invite you to bring up issues, questions, or concerns to our attention about the School of Public Health as we are here to represent you, the students.
Committee Membership and Participation is Welcome from All PHSA Students
In addition, if you would like to become involved, you can work on one or more of our committees as committee members in the PHSA Council.
We will be having our first Council Meeting on Thursday, November 6th at 5:30PM in the PHSA Lounge (on the A-level of SPH building) to form committees and goals for the upcoming year.
Duties of Departmental Representatives
The duties of the Departmental Representative will be as follows (as established in the PHSA Constitution, Article II, page 6):
- Works closely with the Executive Board and other PHSA Department Representatives to organize and manage PHSA activities.
- Co-Chairs a PHSA Committee including: the Academic and Career Committee, Community Outreach Committee, International Health Committee, Social and Activities Committee, Fundraising and End of the Year Banquet Committee, Legislative Watch and Student Action Committee, Public Health Week Committee, and Website Committee.
- Represents student concerns at monthly PHSA Representative Board meetings.
- Represents student concerns at departmental faculty meetings.

If any School of Public Health students would like to become involved, they may work on one or more of the PHSA committees as committee members in the PHSA Council. (See Committee Page for details)

All registered SPH students may join, and the Department Representatives will co-chair the committees (as described in the PHSA Constitution, Article II, page 6).
The Committees' projects, meeting dates, times and locations as well as their co-chairs'
contact information, will be listed under each committee soon, now that the October 2008 elections
for Departmental Representatives were held and the committees are undertaking their annual plans.
