PHSA has a total of six internal committees where FSPH students can serve as members! These committees are a great way to make an impact on our school, campus, and local communities. Below is a list of the five different committees and a brief description is provided for each.
Community Outreach and Volunteer Committee
The Community Outreach and Volunteering Committee provides opportunities for students to give back to our community and the Greater LA area. Previous events ranged from volunteering at the LA marathon, beach cleanups, and fundraising for local charities and clinics. This committee will be responsible for organizing events and engaging students to give back.
Diversity and Inclusion Committee
The Diversity and Inclusion Committee is a supportive and representative committee rather than an active one. Members are required to promote the committee’s events, represent the students at meetings, and exchange and propose ideas. Participation comes from students, faculty, and staff. Dr. Kagawa-Singer is the professor that chairs the committee. She finds ways to engage students in different subjects and open conversations. Last year many school-wide events were organized to bring the school’s diverse population together such as Meet and Greet events during lunchtime, workshops by guest speakers covering issues like racism and social justice, theatre, book discussions, and jazz events were also put together to create multi-department interactions.
The Sports Committee organizes intramural sports event during the year to create more opportunities for students from different departments to connect. The committee will be responsible for finding and creating events that encourage overall well-being and physical activity. We meet every Thursday from 5 to 6 pm at the Drake Stadium to workout outdoors. The workouts range from running campus loops to fun challenging exercises on the beautiful UCLA campus and all levels are welcomed. Every year FSPH students run the LA City Marathon as a fundraising and team event. The Sports Committee also schedules fun weekend hikes around LA to discover the city and where students can meet one another to create a support network. Other sports events to be organized include beach volley, paddle boarding, and yoga in the park.
The Survey Committee organizes the annual school-wide survey, which collects information on student and faculty experiences, suggestions, and needs. The feedback received from the survey has been used to implement student-led recommendations that benefit the school as a whole, including the common hour and hard-skill workshops. Members of this committee are responsible for creating the survey, engaging students and faculty to participate, and analyzing the data collected. The results are then shared with the FSPH Dean’s office, students, and faculty, which is then used to implement changes and/or new initiatives.
The Social Committee coordinates events throughout the year, including happy hours, coffee breaks with faculty, socializing events at school to engage in safe spaces for conversation, networking opportunities, and many other fun social events off or on campus! The biggest event put on by the Social Committee is the end-of-year PHSA Banquet. Each year the banquet hosts students, faculty, and staff for dinner, drinks, and lots of dancing. This committee is responsible for planning the event including theme selection, décor, venue booking, and other event logistics. Students on this committee have the ability to be creative with the events they host.
