The mission of the UCLA Preventive Medicine Residency is to help train Preventive Medicine specialists to serve the public and be leaders in the field in community agencies, health departments, health maintenance organizations, hospitals, or in academic settings including teaching, research, policy formulation, as well as service.
The residency program has been training physicians since 1970. The program provides training in the academic and practicum years as defined by the American Board of Preventive Medicine . The program is based on the academic strength of the UCLA School of Public Health in conjunction with the UCLA School of Medicine and outstanding UCLA affiliated agencies such as the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services and others.
Flexibility is an essential component of the UCLA program. Residents may train in a wide variety of settings while pursuing their commitment to preventive medicine and public health. The particular strengths of the program lie in the areas of public health (particularly in medically underserved areas), clinical preventive medicine, health services, epidemiology, administration, and research. In addition, residents may develop individualized training programs in any area of preventive medicine.
