UCLA PROFESSOR OF PUBLIC HEALTH AND PEDIATRICS ELECTED TO INSTITUTE OF MEDICINE

Dr. Jonathan Fielding, a professor of public health and pediatrics at UCLA, has been elected to the prestigious Institute of Medicine, acknowledging his achievement in and commitments to key health issues faced by the public.

Fielding, who is widely known for his work in health promotion, disease preventionand health policy, is one of 55 members elected to the institute this year.

"It is indeed an honor to be elected by my peers to this prestigious organization," Fielding said. "This provides me with an additional venue for involvement in key health issues facing our community and the rest of the nation."

The Institute of Medicine is a unit of the National Academy of Sciences, a federally chartered organization that advises Congress and other government groups about key issues relating to science and health policy.

Institute members are drawn from medicine and other disciplines, and volunteer their time to study problems relating to the advancement of the health professions, specific health problems and the improvement of health care.

Fielding has been a professor of public health and pediatrics at UCLA since 1979 and is co-director of the UCLA Center for Healthier Children, Families and Communities. He is president-elect of the American College of Preventive Medicine, a former health commissioner of the state of Massachusetts, editor of the Annual Reviews of Public Health and vice chairman of Partnership for Prevention.
