Public Health Minor

The UCLA School of Public Health has offered a Minor since the Fall Quarter of 2003. It is designed for students who wish to learn more about core public health functions, including the assessment and monitoring of the health of communities and populations at risk to identify health problems and priorities, the formulation of public policies designed to solve identified local and national health problems and priorities, the assurance that all populations have access to appropriate and cost-effective care, and the evaluation of the effectiveness of that care.

Course Requirements for the Minor in Public Health:

The Minor in Public Health comprises seven courses as follows:

  • Public Health 150: Contemporary Health Issues (taken during the first term of enrollment in the Minor)
  • Biostatistics 100A: Introduction to Biostatistics
  • Community Health Sciences 100: Introduction to Community Health Sciences
  • Environmental Health Sciences 100: Introduction to Environmental Health
  • Epidemiology 100: Principles of Epidemiology
  • Health Services 100: Health Services Organization
  • 1 additional elective course, to be selected from: Biostatistics 100B; Community Health Sciences 90, 91, 130, 132, M140, 195, 196A; Health Services 98H, M110, C121; Public Health 53, M106, or M151 (other courses may be accepted via a blue petition).

All courses for the Minor must be taken for a letter grade, with a minimum grade of C in each course, and an overall grade-point average of 2.0 or better. Successful completion of the Minor is indicated on the transcript and diploma.


Applying to the Minor in Public Health:

Students wishing to apply to the Minor in Public Health must be in good academic standing with an overall grade-point average of 2.0 or better, and must have completed 90 or more units. To apply to the Minor, interested students must submit an Application, a Degree Progress Report, and an Application Essay to A1-269 CHS by July 13th.
